How To Deep Clean Your Ventilation Hood

Blog

A ventilation hood above your stove is a great appliance to have to help get rid of food odors while cooking and to take out the humidity while cooking. At the press of a button you can turn on the fan to suck out those odors, steam and humidity to get rid of them and send them right up the vent and out of your home. The downside to a hood vent is the amount of grease and dust that clings to the vent. If you haven't cleaned yours lately, you may be in for a shock. See below for some deep cleaning tips for your kitchen ventilation hood.

Here's What You'll Need:

  • White vinegar
  • Warm water
  • Sponge
  • Soft bristle scrub brush
  • Mild dish detergent
  • Screwdriver

Instructions:

  1. Start with the exterior of your hood vent and give it a nice wipe down with a mixture of mild dish detergent and warm water. Gently scrub the exterior of the hood vent with the soapy mixture and a sponge or washcloth. The mild detergent is safe to use on most hood vents but check with the manufacturer to be sure. The soapy water will help remove grease splatters and dust. Rinse your cloth or sponge often to remove the filthy buildup and change water if necessary.
  2. Wipe down the hood vent exterior with a clean, damp cloth to rinse off any leftover soap residue.
  3. Next, remove the hood vent filter underneath the hood vent. If you need to, use a screwdriver to remove the filter. This is where you'll notice quite a bit of disgusting buildup.
  4. Take the vent filter and soak it in your sink with about 1/2 cup of white vinegar mixed with warm water and a drop of dish soap.
  5. Allow the filter to soak for about 15 minutes. You can use a soft bristle brush or sponge to gently clean the filter. You can purchase a new vent filter if your filter is in really rough shape or doesn't come clean. You can find a new filter at your local hardware store or from your local appliance store.
  6. When the filter is clean and dry (or you've purchased a new one), replace the filter and turn on your vent to be sure it is working properly and the vent filter is set correctly.

Keep this appliance clean to ensure it works properly and to prevent that buildup of dust and grease from getting near the food you're preparing. Clean your hood vent at least once per week and clean the filter every other month.
